Three years ago, 4-week-old Jersie N. Hayes died in her parents' mobile home in Fenton. An autopsy did not reveal why. But federal prosecutors claimed Tuesday that her father's methamphetamine-making had contributed, and therefore he ought to spend extra time in prison.
A judge deferred sentencing of James G. Hayes as the issue plays out.
"We think that by manufacturing meth in his home, he endangered the health of all of his children and specifically contributed to the death of this baby," U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway said after the hearing in U.S. District Court in St. Louis.
Federal prosecutors are cracking down on cases in which meth-making, which involves hazardous chemicals and is often done in homes, endangers children.
